Recent Blog Post: NHL Playoff Observations -- Round Two Tuesday
Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Team captains do not act like children. They do not blame others. They stand up and accept responsibility. Alexander Ovechkin has been looking in that fun house mirror again. Have I ever mentioned how I much I can't stand people like that?
  • Special teams -- will they be the story of the second round? They sure were in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.
  • "Bleep happens." No guff, Erik Karlsson. The D -- including you -- made way too many mistakes. And you can't expect your goalie to bail you out against a team as powerful as the Pens.
  • Erik Gryba is a big boy, but so is Brooks Orpik. I wonder how many Gs they pulled on that hit. I once hit a brick wall like that when I was playing hockey. I gave up 5" and at least 60 lbs, and had whiplash for three weeks. I feel your pain.
  • Raffi Torres is at his best when he plays with an edge. But that hit on Jarret Stoll was the old Torres, not the new, so-called "improved" Torres. There should be a discipline discussion, but Stoll wasn't hurt and you and I both know that changes the discussion. We don't have to like it ...
  • Drew Doughty's knee looked like it suffered a little ligament stretch on hit late in the second. Uh-oh.
  • Guess who's in a zone. Yup, Mike Richards. It might have been just his first goal, but it was his sixth point in seven games. And his overall game just gets better and better.
  • I was impressed with the Sens. That early goal could have completely deflated them, but they replied in just 2:10. After that, the special teams issue bit them in the butt in a big way.
  • My last (I hope) Leafs comment. I came away impressed. Yes, they suffered the worst Game 7 collapse in pro hockey history, but there weren't any bad goals in there. They were simply out-muscled on each and every goal, even if they had position on them. They'll learn.
