| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
Justin Grimm (P) TEX |
5/18/2013 |
| Grimm allowed two runs over 6.2 innings and was the winning pitcher Saturday against the Tigers. |
He gave up seven hits while walking one and striking out two. After consecutive starts in which he allowed five runs it was a relief for Grimm and the Rangers to see him go over six innings and allow just two runs. The win brings his record to 3-3 on the season to accompany 36 strikeouts and a 4.02 ERA. |
|
A.J. Pierzynski (C) TEX |
5/18/2013 |
| Pierzynski (oblique) will begin a two-game rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco on Sunday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. |
Pierzynski has been out since May 6 and is eligible to return from the 15-day DL on Tuesday (May 21). In 26 games for the Rangers this season, the 36-year-old hit .263 with four home runs and 11 RBI. |
|
Ian Kinsler (2B) TEX |
5/18/2013 |
| Kinsler (ribs) remains out of the lineup Saturday, FOX Sports Southwest's Anthony Andro reports. |
Kinsler was able to pinch run Friday night, but apparently he's still struggling with the ribs. Leury Garcia is starting at second base and batting ninth for the Rangers. |

Ian Kinsler (2B) TEX |
5/18/2013 |
| Kinsler (ribs) hopes to return to the starting lineup Saturday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. |
Kinsler tweaked the injury as he twisted in an attempt to get out of the way of a Justin Verlander pitch in the third inning of Friday's game. |
|
Geovany Soto (C) TEX |
5/18/2013 |
| Soto went 1-for-3 with a solo home run against the Tigers on Friday. |
After a 1-for-17 run over five games, Soto has now gone deep in back-to-back games for the first time since June 25-26, 2011. Just a little too late for fantasy owners as A.J. Pierzynski is back early next week which puts Soto back on the bench. He's worth holding onto through the weekend, but once he returns to his reserve role, his value will be minimal. |
|
Nick Tepesch (P) TEX |
5/18/2013 |
| Tepesch gave up two runs on six hits and three walks with one strikeout over five innings against the Tigers on Friday. |
Tepesch pitched a decent game here and has now let up just three runs over his last two starts (11 innings) with nine strikeouts and four walks. He's rebounded well from his pair of bad starts to open May, and has earned a bit of trust for streaming use. He'll face the A's at home next week, where he has a 3.48 ERA over 20.2 innings. |
|
Ian Kinsler (2B) TEX |
5/17/2013 |
| Despite being scratched from the starting lineup due to bruised ribs, Kinsler appeared as a pinch runner in the bottom of the ninth inning. |
Obviously the injury isn't too serious if he was able to pinch run with the Rangers down by one run in the ninth. It's not certain how the ribs are affecting his swing, so there is still a strong chance that he sits out Saturday's game as well. |
|
Scott Richmond (P) TEX |
5/17/2013 |
| Richmond was officially assigned to Triple-A Round Rock, according to the Rangers' official site. |
Richmond, who had been pitching for Lotte in the KBO, signed a minor league deal with the Rangers and was pitching at extended spring training. But with Round Rock's Brad Mills landing on the DL, Richmond was immediately assigned. He will slot into the rotation and try to earn himself a call-up this season. |
