| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
David Price (P) TB |
6/19/2013 |
| Price (triceps) will make a rehab start Friday at High-A Charlotte, the Tampa Tribune reports. |
Manager Joe Maddon relayed that Price's schedule will be determined depending on how his left triceps progresses, so his appearances could be irregular. In any case, Maddon expects Price to return to the Rays' rotation by the All-Star break. |
|
Luke Scott (DH) TB |
6/19/2013 |
| Scott is not in the Rays' lineup Wednesday in Boston, the Tampa Bay Times reports. |
After playing in both ends of Tuesday's doubleheader, the soon-to-be 35-year-old will fit in a day of rest. Scott recently had a five-game hitting streak, during which he hit .500 (7-for-14) with one long ball, four RBI, and two runs. In his stead, Kelly Johnson will take on DH duties, batting seventh in the order. |
|
Joel Peralta (P) TB |
6/19/2013 |
| Peralta took the loss on Tuesday in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Red Sox after allowing a walk-off two-run homer to Jonny Gomes. |
Peralta entered a tie game in the ninth inning and led off by walking Daniel Nava before Jonny Gomes took the first pitch deep to left to end the game. With 37 appearances this season, Peralta is tied for the AL-lead in that category and still carries a very solid 2.51 ERA. Fernando Rodney has been very up-and-down this season but has done enough lately to hold onto the closer's role. With Peralta still in the setup spot, he would likely be the next in line should a save opportunity be available. |
|
Taylor Guerrieri (P) TB |
6/19/2013 |
| Guerrieri was selected as a Midwest League All-Star after going 5-2 with a 2.50 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 11 starts in the first half of the season for Low-A Bowling Green. |
Guerrieri was selected in the first round of the 2011 draft but did start playing in professional games until excelling in short-season ball in 2012. He has picked up where he left off and could move up the ladder in the Rays' system to High-A later this season. |
|
Alex Colome (P) TB |
6/19/2013 |
| Colome is expected to be called up from Triple-A Durham to start Saturday's game against the Yankees, the Tampa Bay Times reports. |
Colome threw well in earning a victory in his major league debut May 30 against the Marlins throwing 5.2 innings and only allowing one unearned run. The Rays have limited his workload over his last two starts that were on short rest possibly to get him on schedule to start in the big leagues. With Alex Cobb out indefinitely with a concussion and David Price still working back from a triceps injury, Colome will have a chance to prove himself with the Rays but will have a tough opponent in the Yankees. |
|
Wil Myers (OF) TB |
6/18/2013 |
| Myers started in both games of the Rays' doubleheader against the Red Sox on Tuesday, going a combined 1-for-7 with two Ks. |
It's hard to make a case for calling up Myers and not playing him almost every day, especially with Luke Scott seeing regular at-bats, so we should see plenty more of what the top prospect has to offer in the coming weeks. |
|
Jake Odorizzi (P) TB |
6/18/2013 |
| Odorizzi returned to Triple-A Durham after starting the second game of the Rays' doubleheader against the Red Sox on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Times reports. |
Odorizzi was called up to take Alex Cobb's (concussion) spot on the active roster. He pitched well, allowing just one earned run in 5.2 innings, but received a no-decision. |

| The Rays have announced whom they'll send to the Arizona Fall League this winter, the Tampa Tribune reports. Triple-A RHP Chris Mason will join five Double-A players (LHP James Houser, RHP Ryan Reid, C Matt Spring, IF Rhyne Hughes and OF J.T. Hall) on the roster of the Peoria Javelinas this fall. |

| The Rays have already set a franchise record for most spring training wins in one season (17-6-2 through Wednesday), the St. Petersburg Times reports. While everyone involved quickly admits that spring training records don't mean much, Rays manager Joe Maddon takes their spring record as just one piece of evidence that the Rays have "been doing the little things properly" this spring. The times also did some research to show that, perhaps, extreme success in the spring is a sign of good things to come; of the five best spring won-loss records posted since 1980 (a list the Rays would crack at their current pace), each of those five teams made the playoffs. |
