| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
Grant Balfour (P) OAK |
5/24/2013 |
| Balfour survived two walks Friday night to save his 10th game in 10 save chances. |
Balfour has now converted 28 straight save chances and after an awful run with a lack of save opportunities earlier this year, Balfour finally has had a nice save run recently with seven saves the last three weeks. He remains a very solid closer for fantasy with a very strong hold on the A's closer job. |
|
Chris Young (OF) OAK |
5/24/2013 |
| Chris Young had 3 hits, including a 3 run home run in the 9th inning of Friday night's game to lead the A's to a 6-5 win. |
Young now has 5 home runs in just over 100 at bats this year, but is still hitting only .189. Young will continue to get regular at bats in the A's outfield until Josh Reddick comes off the DL. Young has value in deeper leagues due to his speed and power, as long as you can stomach the poor BA. |
|
Josh Reddick (OF) OAK |
5/24/2013 |
| Reddick (wrist) completed a batting practice session Friday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. |
Reddick was reportedly spraying the ball all over the field, leaving no trace of any sort of lingering wrist issue. It's looking likely that he will be activated at some point next week, with a rehab game or two not totally out of the question. |
|
Jed Lowrie (SS) OAK |
5/24/2013 |
| Manager Bob Melvin said Lowrie (foot) would not require a DL stint, the MLB.com's Jane Lee reports. |
Despite dealing with a some swelling on his foot for the last three days and missing the Athletics' two games during that span, it appears the team has been pleased enough with his progress that he won't require a more lengthy absence. There remains a good chance he'll play in the weekend series against the Astros, with a return Sunday looking most likely. |
|
Seth Smith (OF) OAK |
5/24/2013 |
| Smith is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Astros, according to MLB.com's Jane Lee. |
Smith is hitting .350 against left-handers this season, but he will sit out Friday with the A's employing a right-heavy lineup against Astros starter Erik Bedard. |
|
Brandon Moss (1B) OAK |
5/24/2013 |
| Moss is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Astros, according to MLB.com's Jane Lee. |
Moss is hitting just .189 against left-handers this season, so he will sit out against Houston southpaw Erik Bedard. Nate Freiman will get the start at first base in Moss' place. |
|
Jed Lowrie (SS) OAK |
5/24/2013 |
| Lowrie (foot) is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Astros, according to MLB.com's Jane Lee. |
The A's did not play Thursday, but Lowrie's foot is apparently still too swollen for him to play through, so he will sit out for the second straight game. Eric Sogard will make another start at second base in his place. |
|
Nate Freiman (1B) OAK |
5/23/2013 |
| Freiman has not been involved in any recent A's lineups and has only one at-bat since May 16. |
Freiman was playing against a lot of lefties for a bit, but with the A's offense getting more healthy, he has been on the outside looking in. Freiman has no current fantasy value, even in a deep AL-only league. |
|
Sean Doolittle (P) OAK |
5/23/2013 |
| Doolittle has been dominant so far in 2013, compiling a 0.90 ERA and a 0.60 WHIP through 20 innings. |
Doolittle's amazing transformation from a highly drafted first baseman to an elite relief pitcher continues. If something were to happen to Grant Balfour, it is possible Doolittle could get the call to close, although Ryan Cook has been very solid also. Doolittle is an excellent play in an AL-only league where his high strikeout rate and elite ratios will very much help a team. |
