| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
Travis Hafner (DH) NY-A |
5/18/2013 |
| Hafner returned to the lineup Saturday with a bang while hitting a two-run homer in the eighth inning of a winning effort. . |
Hafner had hit several long balls earlier in the game that had gone foul until keeping this one fair. After battling a shoulder injury earlier in the week, Hafner appears to be safe to activate once again. |
|
Chris Stewart (C) NY-A |
5/18/2013 |
| Stewart (groin) is expected to be available to play Sunday, according to Newsday. |
Keep in mind, however, that available doesn't mean Stewart will start the game, but manager Joe Girardi can probably feel a bit more comfortable about using him later in the game should he feel the need to pinch hit for Austin Romine. |
|
Alberto Gonzalez (SS) NY-A |
5/18/2013 |
|
|
Reid Brignac (SS) NY-A |
5/18/2013 |
| The Yankees have acquired Brignac from the Rockies, CBS' Jon Heyman reports. |
It's possible that the former second-round pick will see semi-regular time for the Yankees, given that he's potentially the best defensive option to play shortstop on the 25-man roster while Derek Jeter remains on the disabled list. |
|
Hiroki Kuroda (P) NY-A |
5/17/2013 |
| Kuroda tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out five in the Yankees' 5-0 win over Toronto on Friday night. |
That makes seven consecutive quality starts as Kuroda now sports a 6-2 record with a dazzling 1.99 ERA. He'll take on the Orioles in Baltimore next time out and is certainly an arm to ride. |
|
Austin Romine (C) NY-A |
5/17/2013 |
| Romine was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and an RBI in the Yankees 5-0 win over Toronto on Friday night. |
With Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart injured, Romine could see quite a bit of playing time in the near future. He is known more for his defense than his bat, but he is considered the Yankees catcher of the future so he might be worth a look in fantasy circles. |
|
Jayson Nix (3B) NY-A |
5/17/2013 |
| Nix contributed two RBI with a pair of walks and two sacrifice flies in the Yankees' win over the Blue Jays on Friday night. |
Playing the entire game at shortstop, Nix did not record an official at-bat, but he still managed to contribute, including picking up his second stolen base of the year. With Kevin Youkilis not expected back for a couple more weeks, he has experienced a bump in playing time and could be worthy of consideration in deeper leagues. |
|
Brett Gardner (OF) NY-A |
5/17/2013 |
| Gardner was 2-for-3 with a walk, a triple, a run scored and an RBI in Friday's win over Toronto. |
He lead off the bottom of the first with a triple, and scored the Yankees' first run, then added an RBI single in the seventh as the Yankees put the game out of reach. He's hitting just .261 on the year, but his speed and position at the top of New York's batting order bodes well for his fantasy potential as the season progresses. |
|
Kevin Youkilis (3B) NY-A |
5/17/2013 |
| Manager Joe Girardi said Youkilis (back) will take batting practice "pretty soon," the Newark Star-Ledger reports. |
Youkilis has already resumed playing catch and fielding grounders, so getting some swings in will cover the full gamut of baseball-related activities. He remains without a timetable for his return and could require a rehab stint. |
