| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
David Lough (OF) KC |
5/18/2013 |
| Making his season debut, Lough went 2-for-4 with an RBI-double and had a nice outfield assist credited to him after throwing out Brandon Moss trying to take second on a base hit. |
Lough is up to replace the injured Jarrod Dyson and will likely also get the nod over Jeff Francoeur more often than not. The 27-year-old, left-handed hitter was batting .340 with three home runs and 17 RBI over 36 games and with manager Ned Yost insisting that he'll always be starting the hot bat, Lough should remain a regular in the lineup. |
|
James Shields (P) KC |
5/18/2013 |
| Shields took a tough loss after pitching an eight-inning complete game and giving up just two runs on six hits and a walk with nine strikeouts against the A's. |
Shields was victimized by the long ball as he served up two dingers to Josh Donaldson and Adam Rosales to give the A's all the offense they would need. He threw 122 pitches in total (76 strikes) and stayed sharp for the entire night, only to be let down by another outing devoid of offensive support. He remains a must-start each week, particularly his next time out when he faces the lowly Astros. |
|
Jarrod Dyson (OF) KC |
5/17/2013 |
| Dyson (ankle) will likely miss two-to-four weeks, the Kansas City Star reports. |
The timetable was determined following Dyson's MRI back in Kansas City on Friday. While Dyson is out, David Lough will settle in as the team's utility outfielder. |

Jarrod Dyson (OF) KC |
5/17/2013 |
| Dyson returned to Kansas City on Friday for an MRI on his sprained ankle, the Kansas City Star reports. |
Dyson was placed on the DL earlier in the day and indicated his ankle felt worse Friday after he exited Wednesday's game with the injury. He should have a firmer timetable for return after team doctors take a closer look at the injury. |
|
Jeff Francoeur (OF) KC |
5/17/2013 |
| Francoeur is not in the lineup Friday against the Athletics, the Kansas City Star reports. |
With Francoeur contributing a meager .258 on-base percentage, he'll find his way out of the lineup for the second consecutive night, ceding the start to David Lough. If Lough can provide even a slight lift offensively, he could eventually displace Francoeur as the starter in right field. |
|
Johnny Giavotella (2B) KC |
5/17/2013 |
| Giavotella went 1-for-4 with a double, one RBI and a run scored against Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday. |
Giavotella has hit safely in eight straight games and is batting .324 with two home runs and 10 RBI in that span. He tends to be a bit streaky and neither his strikeout nor walk rate are exactly where you'd like to see them. But he is finally hitting for a bit more power as evidenced by his .178 ISO, which is the highest it's been since a 16-game stint in the Arizona Fall League back in 2010. It's hardly a last chance for him seeing as how he's only 25, but with a slumping Chris Getz and Elliot Johnson as the only ones standing in his way in Kansas City, there's no better time than the present for him to prove himself and earn a call-up. The ball lies solely in his court as nothing would make the club happier than for him to prove he belongs in the majors. |
|
David Lough (OF) KC |
5/17/2013 |
| Lough has been recalled from Triple-A Omaha. |
The left-handed hitting outfielder is 27, so his .870 OPS in the PCL should be taken with the appropriate grain of salt. Most likely, Lough will be used sparingly while Jarrod Dyson recovers from the sprained ankle that landed him on the 15-day DL in the move corresponding to Lough's promotion. |
|
Jarrod Dyson (OF) KC |
5/17/2013 |
| Dyson (ankle) has been placed on the 15-day DL. |
David Lough has been recalled from Triple-A Omaha to replace Dyson on the roster, while the Royals have not indicated if Dyson will require more than the 15-day DL minimum to recover from his sprain. |
|
Alex Gordon (OF) KC |
5/16/2013 |
| Gordon went 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored against the Angels on Wednesday. |
Gordon has now hit safely in his last four games and has multi-hit performances in three of those. In fact, he's had at least two hits in all but four games this month and is now batting .331 with a .353 on-base percentage. It would appear that he has fully settled into his new spot in the three hole, so continue to enjoy the ride. |

| Hitting coach Andre David was let go on May 1 after the Royals finished April last in the American League in hits, runs and home runs. He will now be the Royals' minor-league hitting instructor. Mike Barnett, the team's former minor-league hitting instructor, has been promoted to fill the major-league job. |

| The Royals are arguing against a recent Forbes article that said the team made $20 million profit last season, while losing over 100 games. "Once again, Forbes is not accurate in the information they are reporting on the Royals," said Mark Gorris, the club’s senior vice president for business operations, in The Kansas City Star. |
