| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
Jason Castro (C) HOU |
5/25/2013 |
| Castro went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in the Astros' loss to the A's on Saturday. |
The home runs were Nos. 5 and 6 on the season, which gives him as many home runs as he had all of last season, but in 100 fewer at-bats. Castro received a day off Friday but should continue to hit in the heart of the Astros' order on a daily basis. |
|
Matt Dominguez (3B) HOU |
5/25/2013 |
| Dominguez went 2-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs in the Astros' loss to the A's on Saturday. |
Dominguez dealt with a quad injury earlier in the week but does not appear to be experiencing any of the effects from that injury any more. He has a reputation of being a solid glove with a quiet bat but now has seven home runs under his belt since May 11. Unfortunately for those in need of batting average (and OBP), he only has 11 hits total since that date. |
|
Lucas Harrell (P) HOU |
5/25/2013 |
| Harrell only lasted 1.2 innings against the A's on Saturday, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks in his sixth loss of the season. |
Harrell made it through the first inning of this one without much effort, but a barrage of singles and walks in the second spelled his end. He is now 0-4 over his last five starts and has an ugly 9:17 K:BB ratio over those 24 innings. |
|
Joe Sclafani (SS) HOU |
5/25/2013 |
| Sclafani went 3-for-4 with one RBI, two runs scored and a walk against High-A Inland Empire on Friday. |
Despite hitting just .241 over 19 games, Sclafani was promoted from Low-A Quad Cities of the Midwest League recently and is batting .400 with seven RBI and five stolen bases upon his arrival. He's hit safely in nine of his last 10 and has struck out just six times versus 10 walks in that span. The switch-hitter out of Dartmouth might not be long for the California League and could find himself in Double-A midway through the season should he continue to play at this level. |
|
Ronny Cedeno (SS) HOU |
5/25/2013 |
| Cedeno, who returned Friday from a sinus issue, has lost some weight from the illness that caused significant dizziness and vomiting, according to the team's official site. |
Cedeno spent the last couple days getting rehydrated and should be back at 100 percent. He'll continue to see at-bats against lefties. |
|
Justin Maxwell (OF) HOU |
5/25/2013 |
| Maxwell's rehab assignment from a fractured left hand will begin in the Astros' extended spring training facility in Kissimmee, FL. If all goes well there, he will report to Low-A Quad Cities within a week to continue his rehab, according to the team's official site. |
Maxwell's swing, in which he holds his pinkies over the bat knob, puts some additional pressure on the fracture site. The good news is his hand is not getting swollen, even if it may be a little sore. Astros manager Bo Porter said the team doesn't want to rush him. |
|
Jose Veras (P) HOU |
5/24/2013 |
| Veras suffered a blown save Friday while giving up a pair of walks and a three-run homer in a loss to Oakland. |
Throughout his career, Veras' control has kept him from being utilized in more high-leverage situations. Prior to Friday, Veras had pitched well for a recent stretch including seven no-hit, shutout frames, and he should still have some security as the Astros closer. |
