| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
Jose Iglesias (SS) BOS |
5/21/2013 |
| Iglesias started at third base Tuesday afternoon for Triple-A Pawtucket, WEEI.com reports. It was his first start at third base as a professional. |
By having Iglesias play another position, the Red Sox are trying to increase his chances of getting promoted to play a utility role. |
|
Jacoby Ellsbury (OF) BOS |
5/21/2013 |
| Red Sox manager John Farrell said he's considered moving Ellsbury out of the leadoff spot, but he's sticking with the center-fielder atop the batting order, ESPN Boston reports. |
Farrell will give Ellsbury more time to snap out of the situation he's currently in. He entered Tuesday night's game with a slash line of .241/.303/.335/,638. |
|
Daniel Bard (P) BOS |
5/21/2013 |
| Bard will be limited to bullpen sessions in the near future in an effort to combat his control issues, the Boston Herald reports. |
Bard has given up 13 hits and walked 17 batters in 12.2 innings out of the bullpen with Double-A Portland, so he will take a break from game action for the time being to give him a chance to work through his mechanical issues. |
|
Shane Victorino (OF) BOS |
5/21/2013 |
| Victorino (hamstring) is not in the Red Sox's lineup Tuesday at the White Sox. |
While the injury to his left hamstring is not considered severe, the banged-up Victorino will sit out for the third time in the past five games (the first two the result of back spasms). His absence will allow Jonny Gomes to man left field, while Daniel Nava slides over to right field. |
|
Rubby De La Rosa (P) BOS |
5/21/2013 |
| De La Rosa was scratched from Tuesday's start at Triple-A Pawtucket after tweaking a muscle in his side, WEEI.com reports. |
This sounds like a rib injury for De La Rosa, though it has not been clarified. He continues to ramp up his workload at Pawtucket, but has totaled just 24.2 innings in his eight starts this season. His stats look nice -- a 3.65 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 29:14 K:BB -- though a more robust pitch count is likely required for him to help out the Red Sox's rotation in the coming months. |
|
Jackie Bradley (OF) BOS |
5/21/2013 |
| Bradley doubled and homered in four at-bats Monday night for Triple-A Pawtucket. |
The homer was his first at the Triple-A level. He's hitting .315 since being sent down to Pawtucket. |

9/20/2008 |
| The Red Sox announced that they will shift their High-A affiliate from Lancaster (Calif.) to Salem (Va.), the Providence Journal reports. The move means Boston will have all of its affiliates on the East Coast and rids the organization of the issue of high winds in Lancaster that distorted performances of minor leaguers. |
