NEWS UPDATE

Lavarnway has been diagnosed with a broken hamate bone in his left wrist, and while the injury will require surgery, he may be able to return before the end of the season, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. Lavarnway will be out for a minimum of four-to-six weeks, according to CSN New England's Sean McAdam

ROTOWIRE FANTASY ANALYSIS

Lavarnway will presumably be out past the All-Star break, though his absence probably won't have much impact on either the Red Sox or fantasy owners. With Mike Carp (foot) back in the lineup Friday, and Mike Napoli making progress, Lavarnway likely would have been sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket before the end of June. That said, he's both the No. 3 catcher in the organization and a reasonable depth option at first base, so the Red Sox will hope to have him back in August or September.
